Cold Sore Treatment

Cold Sore Treatment

Cold sores are a common nuisance caused by the reactivation of a virus called HSV – 1. Although there is no cure for the herpes simplex virus (HSV – 1 and HSV – 2) that causes them, cold sore breakouts can be managed and avoided. Cold sores, sometimes called fever blisters, appear around the lips and mouth and are often associated with red, swollen and irritated skin around the breakout areas. They can vary in size.

Causes of cold sore outbreaks:

  • Stress
  • Chapped lips
  • Extreme sunlight exposure
  • Physical exhaustion or illness

How does laser treatment work?

Dental lasers are utilized for a variety of treatments and procedures, including cold sores. It is a safe, precise and effective way to treat a specific area of the mouth without damaging surrounding tissue. For procedures that may sometimes cause some pain and discomfort, lasers can be used to treat the area, reducing pain and speeding up recovery time.

The laser targets the lesion in order to kill the virus and stimulate your body's healing potential. The laser does not come in contact with the skin. On average, treatment takes less than 10 minutes!

What can I expect after treatment?

Immediately following treatment, most patients feel relief and do not require another treatment. The cold sore will not come back in the area treated.
